Academies

Striving for Excellence

A.J. Moore Academies have been selected by the Governor of Texas and the Texas Education Agency as a Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Academy. The National Academy Foundation designated A.J. Moore as one of five Distinguished Academies in the United States. In 2008, the International Center chose A.J. Moore Academies as one of three Schools of Distinction in the United States.

Who Can Attend?

All Waco ISD students may attend the A.J. Moore Academies. Students outside the University High School attendance zone must apply for admission. Prospective students and parents are invited to contact the Dean of Academies for information and scheduling campus visits.

Is there a Charge to Attend?

No, it's the best education money can't buy! The cost is the student's and parent's commitment to achieve academic excellence.

What are Academies?

Formerly a stand-alone magnet high school, A.J Moore Academies moved in 2012 to University High School to offer its four year in-depth study in various career pathways to all students in Waco Independent School District. Beginning in 2013, all ninth and tenth grade students became a part of a wall-to-wall academy model, enrolled in one of nine career academies (see inset).

The academies are “schools within a school” that offer a rigorous curriculum along with an infusion of career technology skills in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.

Students have an opportunity to participate in internships during the summer between their junior and senior years. Through these internships, students merge classroom experiences with the real world of work.
